KB816037: "You Cannot Download Files from an FTP Server"

What happens is, when I click on a link that in going to invoke an ftp
download, my IE6 starts flickering at a high rate and task manager indicates
that it is running the cpu at about 86 percent. I have to kill it to get
back to normal operation.

I can vouch that I have turned off Norton NAV, ZoneAlarm and ALL other
resident programs so that is NOT the issue.

I'm Running XP Pro, IE6SP1, direct on Comcast broadband, no router in
between.

I've tried both Advanced switches, checked and unchecked combos-
1) Enable folder view of FTP sites
2) Use passive FTP

Further, I CAN get to the same ftp sites using WS_FTP.

This is a real block and operational problem. Seems for many...

Yes, I know... start at
"You Cannot Download Files from an FTP Server"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=816037

This begs the real question... WHERE can I get
"Date Time Version Size File name"
"------------------------------------------------------------"
"03-Mar-2003 10:59 6.0.2800.1171 483,840 Urlmon.dll"

If you (anyone) has it, feel free to send it directly to me !

Thanks.

FOLLOWUP-

I actually have a later version of urlmon already installed-
urlmon.dll 6.0.2800.1282 10/17/2003 473kb

So that is not the issue. What a pain !

Any solutions ??

Thanks.

Do you happen to have Zone Alarm. If so, disable it
long enough to try d/l from FTP sites.

This problem occurs because Internet Explorer 6.0 uses Passive FTP
to download files from an FTP server that is configured so that it only
has a limited number of available TCP ports. Passive FTP uses an
arbitrary TCP port to connect to an FTP server and may not connect
if the FTP server is configured to use a limited number of TCP ports.
</quote>

If this article applies you may get some clues by using netstat -a
to find out which ports are now being used.

Another way to get some clues about the particular server you are
trying to connect to would be to use a manual connection from the
command line to try to understand what may be different about it.
(I'm not familiar with WS_FTP but I'm guessing that you won't see
all the prompts that the ftp command would.)

Real clues would be available if you have a packet tracer.
E.g. then you could tell if your CPU utilization was related
to message flow or the processing of one particular message.

Good luck
