I had a similar problem with my PSC 2355, and ended up uninstalling everything, reboot, install printer software and drivers, reboot, plug printer in, turn it on, and print. My PML Driver HPZ12 is set to manual, and I tried printing a few things just now and it never started; I believe it's used for the scanner part and HP Director.
