Using xp prof n never use USB before and I realised that there is no USB
controller in my Device Manager. But there is the2 usb ports that come with
the motherboard.
mobo id 02/17/2000-693-686-2A6LGC39C-00
mobo name Chaintech 6AIA(2)/6ASA/6ASV/6ATA2/ 2the Max 6XBA/matsonic MS71...

Check the bios and it was set as Pnp OS installed - "NO". When it turn it on
to "Yes", and reboot my pc, it still cannot detect the USB. How can I get the
USB controllers in my DM so that I can use the USB modem etc. TIA

Have you tried running the "add new hardware wizard"?

Enter BIOS setup, Check in either Advanced or Peripherals. Likely,
there is an option to enable/disable/configure the USB controllers.
Depending on the Chipset (Northbridge/Southbridge) on the MB,
you should install the latest Chipset package.

If you don't known which vendor Chipset is in use, download and
install/run Everest Home Edition (Inventory Tool).
Download Everest here:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3

Also, make sure your Device Manager doesn't contain an "Other"
category. This is where XP enumerates/places devices it detects
but has no driver to install for them.

Did as you say, in bios enabled the usb, n took out other devices. Reboot n
it auto detect and now works ok. TIA

How do I uninstall the Everest?

Control Panel (Classic View), Add/Remove Programs - scroll through
the Alphabetical listing and find Everest. Left click to Select it and then
the "Remove" button on the Right side of the listing.

Not in there. I copy the prog fr the disc n paste on a folder in desktop ands
extract it into another desktop folder(ext) and click on Everest. Its not in
the Add/Remove.Its also not in All prog., its at c:\windows\prefetch +
c:\docs n settings\user\desktop\ext. Thanks

Its an executable file that's not installed, just selected. There's nothing
to uninstall.
I keep the Everest files in a folder so-named Everest, and I created a
shortcut on the desktop to it's executable file (exe filename extension).
If you don't want it any more, just delete the files created by the
downloaded file, and the downloaded file itself.
