How to format a Maxtor external hard drive

I am having dreadful trouble getting my computer to
recognize my Maxtor One Touch External hard drive. I can
see it in device manager but it's not up there with the C
disk where it should be. Anyone have a suggestion as to
how to get the computer to recognize this external hard
drive?

Also, how do you format an external hard drive?

So, when you see it in Device Manager - are you "initializing" it?
Start -> Help & Support
search for:

initialize
 
Hi Barbara,

Reinstall the USB Port in Windows XP from device manager. This should
recognize the Maxtor One Touch External hard drive in your computer.
