how to convert word doc into rtf

File>Save As, change the file type, click Save. Note that this provides a
_copy_ as an RTF, the original doc will not be 'converted'.

File, Save As, and select "Rich text format (*.rtf)" in the drop-down
at the bottom of the dialog.
