This kind of rambles but I think some background info is
necessary, sorry.
It seems very likely that a new strategic element in
the "War On Terrorism" is gaining momentum and may be
having an increasingly negative impact on the
functionality and usage of PCs. New bugs, viruses,
adware, malware, etc. are appearing with increasing
frequency. About a week ago I had to clean-up a friend's
hard drive after he received a very destructive virus
sent unintention-ally via email. There were so many
other "pain-in-the-ass" (my description) bugs in his
system that the computer was operating at about 10% of
its' poten-tial and he was so frustrated he was using it
less and less and about ready to turn his back on all
computers and the whole IT field.
Included in the infected email was a sentence: 'Oh, so you
are trying to knock my sock off' (or something very
similar). This wording is sufficient to peg the writer as
not being familiar with American English colloquialisms
and, putting unhealthy paranoia aside, it isn't much of a
stretch to consider the writer as quite possibly being
involved with al Qaeda or some other similar organization.
So, my questions to the moderator and group are:
1) Realizing that some AV and malware programs are better
at finding bugs and other threats than other programs, how
much protection is enough?
2) Can the options of different AV programs operating
simultaneously be set so the programs do not trip over
each other and bog down the whole system (i.e. how can
different programs be set to operate seamlessly)?
3) Got names & addresses of independent sites evaluating
and reporting on anti-virus software?
