How do I use a different slide design for the first slide?

I am trying to use one slide design for the intro slide & another slide
design for all of the others. I have the first slide done, but when I go to
the next one & try to modfiy the slide design, it does the same for the first
one too.

It sounds to me like you need to insert something called a "title master"

view menu > masters > slide master

insert menu > insert a new title master

you can press 'page up/page down' to toggle between the regular slide master
and the title master.

to use the "title master" you need to use the "title slide" layout (format
menu > layout)
