how do I repair a pst file?

Can any one help me? Outlook suddenly stopped working and now won't re-start.
I
get a message:

“Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window.
The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact
your administrator if this condition persists.â€

I went to mail in control panel and go to data files and my pst file appears
there, however if try to look that path using windows explorer the file
appears but in smaller size, how can I recover it? I do not want to lost my
messages.

I have Windows XP professional and Office 2003.

Please help me.

Scanpst doesn't LOOK for your PST. You have to tell it where it is.
