how do I make labels suit the page?

G

Guest

I have tried to customise a page of labels (entered all the correct
dimensions) but they are not set out all they should be in print preview or
when printed. I do not have the serial number of the labels, there are 3 wide
10 down.

That's the 5160/8160 label. (And other numbers as well)

What's wrong with the layout?

they are all too close together for the size of the label, so they don't sit
in the right place on the page.
you mention label numbers - are they avery? as I am in China I have some
unbranded labels but I could try those.

If you can't find an exact match from the many label layouts provided, then
it's a simple matter with the aid of a ruler to create your own based on an
A4 label type. From the envelope/labels dialog > options > new label.

that's is what I did first but even with all the correct measurments it still
doesn't 'fit' properly - extremely frustrating.

Your labels might be equivalent to Avery J7158/L7158. 64 x 26.7
mm, 3 across x 10 down, 30 labels per A4 sheet. I don't think
Word includes a pre-defined template for this label size.

What do you mean by 'it doesn't fit'? From the envelope/label dialog, once
you have selected your new label - click the new document button to give you
a table. Format all the cells to have a border. Print this page on thin
plain paper. Hold it over the label sheet. Note where it doesn't line up and
adjust the labels and the page margins to suit. Note that you may not be
able to print the extreme left and right borders as most printers will not
print to the edge of the page.
Transfer the measurement changes to your custom label settings and/or remove
the borders from the document and save that document as a template, which
you can use with mail merge etc.

ok, I've done all that and despite putting in the correct measurements the
first few are sort of in the right place but overall they are too close
together and therefore doesn't print in the middle of each label, it gets
worse the lower down the page it goes. I could try just 'guessing' a number
that might spread them out but that seems ridiculous after measuring the
required distances corrently.

Check that the document page size and the printer page size are both set to
A4 and that there is no zoom setting in the print dialog. Note that the
printer driver may not reflect the accuracy you have set from your ruler and
sometimes small adjustments are necessary. Also many printers have some
difficulty handling labels and slippage occurs.

thanks, I've done all that and after the first disaster with labels have only
used plain paper to try to get the settings right. I have tried this on two
different computers and printers too, so it's really strange.

Anne, I think that I have encountered the same problem as you. Consequently I
am interested to learn if you have hit upon a solution.

G

sorry John, I had to give up and buy branded labels with a number that was
already in word and it worked just fine. still can't see why it wouldn't work
when I entered all the correct measurements.
