I installed an HP USB printer last night, and i can't get rid of the
above icon. when opened it points to the printer--which i installed
and is working fine. i see nothing in the startup of msconfig which
looks like this, there is no process which looks like this, so i'm
lost.

thanks for some help,
ron

With Windows 2K there a check box to get rid of it. But MS likes taking out
sh*t that people actually want and use, only to add other sh*t that people
would never want or use, like Copy-protection.

Hide it.

Right click Taskbar
Select Properties
In Notification Area check Hide Inactive Icons
Click Customize
Select the Safely Remove Hardware Icon and change the behavior to
"Always Hide" in the drop down box

I checked out that article and it is partly incorrect. The icon is *NOT*
telling you it is safe to disconnect the USB device. You are supposed to
click on the icon, look at the popup list it produces, then click on the
particular USB device you wish to disconnect, and a popup tooltip will tell
you when it is safe to do so.

One of the reasons for this is that USB devices can be writable
disk/diskette drives, and if write caching is in effect, simply unplugging
the cable may result in lost data. Safely Remove Hardware finishes writing
from the cache.

AFAIK you can only hide the icon, as per the other response.

Ok, i understand it's purpose--but it and the icon for the drive in
the HP Printer take up too much space in the NA--FOR SOMETHING I WILL
NEVER USE.

perhaps, the correct way is to remove the drive--i have looked for a
way to do it without removing the printer, but have found none yet..

i'll keep looking, and i'll post something on the HP forum...

anymore suggestion/clatifications are appreciated,
ron

You are asking for trouble giving your email address on the net.
Now to the question. This is a driver problem. I have an HP
all in one printer. With version 1 of their drivers this icon
appeared and it had to be used if I turned the printer off.
However HP sent me a CD with version 3 and this icon
does not appear, and can be turned on and off.
