How do i enter the date in column instead of # sign?

I have recieved an Excel spreadsheet that i need to transfer data onto
another spreadsheet and when i copy the date the # sign appears. i can see it
in the formula bar line but it will not stay in the column. Is this because
this came over as an Read only.
