Hiding SharedDocs from "My Network Place"

Kray

Hello everyone,

I would like to hide the SharedDocs folder from the network, I have found on
the net some information about this but none of them worked as I wanted to.
For example, i tried those two tips with no success at all (see below).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------
Method1:
Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Policies \ Explorer \
Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
Name the new value NoSharedDocuments
Double-click this new value, and enter 1 as its Value data
Close the registry editor
Log off, or restart Windows for the changes to take effect
To reverse this process, change the Value data to 0, or delete the
NoSharedDocuments Value.
Method2:
Open Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \
Explorer \ My Computer \ NameSpace \ DelegateFolders
Look for a sub-key titled {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. Delete
this one and all of the Shared Documents folders (normally grouped as "Other
Files Stored on This Computer") will be gone.
Reboot after the changes to make them active.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------

They only hide the SharedDocs folder localy which is not what I want to do,
I would like to disable this feature localy and also on the network. Does
anyone know how to get rid of that ?

Many thanks in advance for your precious help.

The object of the "shared documents" folder is to share on a network. If
you don't want any document to be shared, don't put it in the "shared
documents" folder.

I think what you want to do is open the local group policy of your computer
(MMC->Add Snap in -> group Policy)

Find:
User Configurations\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows
Explorer

Here there is a setting titled 'Remove Shared Documents from My Computer'
- Enable this setting

Do you think I never thought about that ? I just don't want it to be visible
from the network, completely disabled.
Thanks for your help anyway ;-)

Any other ideas ?

Hello Matthew,
thanks for your help, I forgot to mention that I'm using XP Home Edition
:-( and as far as I know group policy is not supported ? Is there any
equivalent to do this from the registry ?

Thanks again.

No registry hack is needed -- there's a much simpler solution:

1. Open My Computer.
2. Right click the Shared Documents folder.
3. Click Sharing and Security.
4. Un-check "Share this folder on the network".
5. Click OK to exit.
