Tony

Hi all,
I have just recently re-installed XP Home. I use
custom startup and exit .wav files and have done for
years. Suddenly for no apparent reason the files don't
play at startup and exit although all other system sounds
play fine. What have I done ? And, how do I recover from
this dilemma ?
Thanks in advance ...

Tony ...

What was the problem that caused you to take the *extremely* drastic
step of re-installing XP Home? Is this in any way a cuause of the
problem you notice?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

When you go to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Sounds: What is there
for Startup and Exit? Play the preview. Is it what should be there? You
probably lost your custom sounds when you re-installed and will have to make
a new scheme.

My God!!!
stop everything...lets all get together and solve this really serious problem
This system cant function without those sounds.
Whatever happened to common sense and at least trying to troubleshoot your own
small problems???
Dont get me wrong...I like to help. This place has helped me at various times and
I enjoy coming here...but..
It seems that way too many are making no effort to get to know their system and
run for help at the slightest sign of something......anything..... not seeming
to work the way they would like.XP has build in help function(I Know..I've used
them all)and 80% of the time they will pinpoint the problem. This one is a
drastic example..."I've reinstall......and for no appparent reason...the custom
sounds wont play".
Duhh!!
yea... its me!!

Hi Bruce,
The files are in place and I can preview them, no
problem, but they will not play at startup & exit. All
other system sounds are ok. Its a curley one eh ?

Rob, no real problem, I just like to freshen up my system
now and then. (14 months since last install)

Peter, I'll ignore the sarcasm in the belief it was good
natured. I'm not exactly a NOOB here and have spent 2
days trying to resolve this issue, so far without
success. (Obviously!) In fact, I regard these little
foibles that Windows throws up now and again as a
chalenge and am usually successful at resolving them, but
this one has me stymied. Of course the SIMPLE action
would be to do a repair install and no doubt the setting
would be reset and my request for help would not take up
any of your valuable time, but that would be too easy eh ?

Suggest you not do this unless you have a compelling reason.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Yep...........that would be too easy
In fact the problem seems to be more serious than you originally stated and if
you read your original post you might also come away with the impression of
someone asking for help without doing any investigating before hand.Or just not
telling us of all the things he did before posting and then running the risk of
getting info he had already tried!! and that header"here's one for the MVP's"
just got to me!!
have a nice day
still me!!
