I have just upgraded to SP2. When I connect to the Internet everything
appears fine for 5 minutes, then I receive the error "Page cannot be
displayed".

I have re-installed XP SP1 and can connect to the Internet. When I upgrade
to SP2 again I get the same problem.

I have tried from the command prompt telnetting to servers on ports 25
(smtp) and port 80 (http) without success.

It appears that SP2 allows the connection out for 5 minutes and then denies
ports.

I have checked the XP firewall and everything looks fine.

I turned off restore points and ran Norton Antivirus with the latest updates
in safe mode. No virus were found.

I have also installed SPYBOT and removed any spyware software but still get
this problem.

Please help :-)

So closing and re-opening IE6 does not help?
Are you on dialup or broadband?

Sorry Keith,

I'm using broadband via speedtouch modem.

Forgot to mention I have disabled Norton AntiVirus and the Windows XP
firewall but still having this problem.

In command prompt DNS resolves ok.

It appears that Windows XP SP2 is blocking ports after 5 minutes. SP1 all
works fine.

Please help otherwise :-)

I have just uninstalled and reinstalled the broadband modem driver but still

I have just uninstalled and reinstalled the broadband modem driver but still
having this problem.

If you are on broad-band, are you not using the ETHERNET port? If you
are using the USB port, and you have an normal Ethernet port, use it
instead. USB has always been a pain, and using it for networking has
always been a problem.

If you are only able to use the USB connection for networking, download
new drivers from the vendors site.

If you are sure the connection IS STILL ACTIVE then i dont know. You are
arn't you?

Hi,

The connection is a USB connection and it is still active. The only way to
connect to the Internet is by rebooting my laptop (SONY FX503) but only for 5
minutes.

I have rebuilt my laptop twice using the manufactures cds. The Internet is
fine using SP1 but as soon as SP2 is installed the same problem occurs?

I have downloaded downloaded all patches for my laptop from Microsoft and
SONY, still no joy :-(

Please help.

Hi,

I have tried everything, I think the problem is with Windows XP SP2
preventing me using port 80 (http).

Something kicks in after 5min? It's not Norton AntiVirus or the XP Firewall.

I have formatted and reinstalled XP twice now.

Please help.

You may be running into the tighter security levels set for the Internet
Zone in SP2, especially regarding Active components. You can relax
them; probably better when this is affecting a site you know and trust
(eg a bank) is to put it in the Trusted Sites - Internet Options,
Security, highlight Trusted sites, click Sites ad use Add

Do you mean 5 minutes after a total reboot
or 5 minutes after logging on
or 5 minutes after opening IE6?

Hi all,

I think I found something here but need some help urgently.

I did a netstat command and found the following:

Protocol=TCP
Local Address=JOT'S LAPTOP
Forgein address=222.226.217.76:epmap
222.184.168.23:epmap
loads of other addresses with the epmap
State=SYN_SENT

These only appear 5 minutes after logging on.

Please help :-(

It would appear that your system has been compromised.

Thanks but what shall I do?

I have formatted twice.

Are you connected to DSL/Broadband?

If you are, are you behind a router/NAT box?

If you've installed XP + SP2 twice and are still compromised, then you
install method is wrong. I'm guessing that your computer is hooked
directly to the internet, and that you are installing XP while having
the internet connection connected.

If you are going to do a safe install, you really need to get SP2 on CD
or get a router with NAT or a personal firewall installed BEFORE
connecting the computer to the internet.

If you can't afford a router, download Zone Alarm Personal at a friends
house, burn it to CD, then come home and wipe/reinstall your XP, install
ZAP, then connect the internet connection and run Windows Update.

When you start the reinstall, make sure that you've booted from the CD,
not a diskette, and then DELETE the partitions (which will delete
everything on the computer) and create a new partition and install XP.

You really need some form of protection - if you have Internet access
through DSL or Cable, get a router, it will save you many times the cost
in return.

Is there away that I can get rid of this problem without reformatting again?

First, when you reply, bottom post - top posting makes it almost
impossible to maintain proper flow of subject.

Second, you didn't answer ANY of the questions I've asked - see them
below, insert your comments below them.

Until we know the answers to the questions there is little chance of
properly answering your question.

Sorry. It's just that I keep getting thrown out because of this problem and
I have to rush (copy paste etc).

The installation was carried out on a windows XP cd and the SP2 was
installed from a CD too. Firewalls were enabled prior to connecting to the
Internet.

SP1 all works fine, it's only when SP2 is installed. Tried a different SP2
too.

I have a ADSL modem directly connected. No NAT nor router.

The connections you are seeing, if your machine is not already
compromised, are "attempts" to connect to your machine. Anything that
attempts to connect to your computer will cause it to use CPU time,
which can slow it down or, depending on other issues, can cause it to
crash. In your case, you may not be compromised, but you appear to have
a LOT of connections or attempted connections.

Since you have DSL, setting up a NAT router would be a great solution.
This would block inbound connections BEFORE they reach your computer,
which would take a load off the system. It also means that you are less
likely to be compromised by the next hole in the OS/Apps.

Disconnect your network cable from the internet - reboot the computer,
does it run for more than 5 minutes - will it run for 30 minutes with
the cable disconnected? If so, then you need a router to block all that
inbound traffic until you can determine what your computer does not like
it.

Disconnect cable, reboot, use computer for at least double the normal
time it takes to reboot on you, and let me know if it was stable with
the cable disconnected.

You're on to something here :-)

Without the cable it is stable :-) netstat command shows no connections.

is "state=syn_sent" in netstat meaning that they are trying to connect to me
rather then my pc connecting to them?

Is there away to block or clean this up? What is epmap?
