Help with Prefetch Files

ECLiPSE 2002

I have been taking steps to speed up my startup and shut down speeds
on my PC with Win Xp home ed. and one of the suggestions I read
mentioned the Prefetch Folder but did not describe what it was - what
it does - or what can be done to it to increase speed..

Can someone kind soul give me some insight into the purpose of the
files in the Prefetch Folder and what, if anything, can or should be
done with them?
