Hi everybody,
Can anyone recommend something for a REAL beginner, not just new to XP but
completely new to computers. A mate of mine (60+) has just got his first
computer and is struggling to get to grips with even the basics like
opening, closing and moving windows and clicking (single or double, left or
right?).
I know there's loads of books about, but I don't think he'd bother with
them. What's needed is a CD-ROM he can just shove in that will talk him
through everything as he does it. A trudge around PC World produced nothing
suitable.
Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

AKE

Search on Video Professor. I've never used it
but you can get a demo for free.

No, the demo "is free" OR " you can get the demo for NOTHING" NOT "for
free".

I just hate the misuse of English in public places......
Due to a Classical Education probably....

I do too, public places or not (although I'm sure I make my share
of mistakes). But if you're the kind of person who lets this sort
of thing bother him, a newsgroup is the wrong place to be.

Besides, correcting people on their grammar or usage is downright
rude.

The local computer user group can be fun, and educational. Some of
them give classes.

Yes, take a computer class or two. Using a CD-ROM tutorial is fine, but when
you hit a roadblock or glitch of some sort - no one is there to help discuss
and explain what happened.

By the way, have you looked at the XP built-in HELP? It provides lots of
answers - but for the total novice, you really need to take a computer
course or two.

Video Professor is very superficial, just barely scratches the surface.
Don't waste your money.

I think that's what he wants - how to click on a file, move a file,
etc. (the guy he's asking for is 60+, & all of this is foreign to
him, the post said).

& looking at their website (accessed from a post in this thread), the
main page says you can use the software either by getting the CD, but
also can be done online.

So if this guy can manage to start his computer, start his ISP
software (assuming he has an ISP), and navigate to the web site, &
then access what's online, he can get help for free. But judging by
the original post the guy may not even be able to get there.

He says they don't ship to the UK. I wonder why he can't pay for the
additional shipping charges? How much can it cost to ship a CD to the
UK? I guess when he said free he really meant it...
