Hi everyone. I've found a virus on my PC
(W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen) and in order to get rid of it I
need to alter the registry. Never having done this
before, I am really nervous, so went to the Microsoft
Knowledge Base to find out how to back up the registry
before I started. It said to load a backup utility from
the XP home edition CD-ROM, but when I had my PC upgraded
they installed XP and didn't give me a Windows CD, only a
restore CD which will take the whole thing back to
factory settings. Can anyone tell me how to do this or
where I can download the backup facility?
Thanks everyone for helping a damsel in distress!

A good free utility for backing up and restoring the registry is EruNT
(http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/). I use this on my
systems and am very happy with it.

Also, a restore point created with System Restore includes a backup of the
registry.

Thanks Sharon, I'll try that. The instructions for
getting rid of the virus said to disable the System
Restore in case it saved the virus too.
Thanks again. Michelle
