When I click the "Help and Support" link in the Start Menu, Help Center is
not opened -
error "windows cannot find helpctr.exe. make sure you typed the name
correctly, and then try again"
A desktop shortcut to "%Windir%\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\HelpCtr.exe" does
not work at all, and the help centre cannot be run by double clicking the
icon in PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries.
looking in "Services", helpctr.exe is "started"
I was running Windows XP Service Pack 1, and have tried loading Service Pack
2 which does not cure the problem.
I am running Norton AntiVirus 2003 and no virus is shown.
I have run adaware with nothing showing here.
I am not sure if it the same problem, but typing "msconfig" in the Run
command does not work, though I can run this from the HelpCtr directory by
double-clicking.
Also the link to systems information in the Accessories section of the Start
button produces no action. However a similar link to disk defragmenter does
work.
The followig error message has been found in the error log associated with
the situation:
Date 07/09/2004
Source: Service Control Manager
Type: error
Event ID: 7000
The Help and Support service failed to start due to the following error:
"The executable programme that this service is configured to run in does not
implement the service.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http:/go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp"
I have tried to do the following instruction from MS Help and Support
usergroup site:
1. reinstall Help & Support
C:\Windows\inf\pchealth.inf
n.b. this asks for the SP2 disk but I can't find the necessary file on the
disk. however, it suggests that the required exe file is already in the right
place.
2. Start / run / helpctr -regserver
this produces the message "cannot find helpctr.exe...."
3. de-register server:
Start / Run / cmd / OK
right click/ regsvr32 /u hhctrl.ocx /ENTER
Close command prompt
I have done this
4. reregister server
Start / Run / cmd / OK
right click/ regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx /ENTER
I have done this
now what can I do?
