Every once in a while I get a loud gunshot noise or a
bark. I have turned off the sound on pop-up blocker, but
I am stymied. Also have McAfee Anti-Virus running. Any
ideas? Thanks.

You've got some kind of spyware or junkware on your machine - unless
you have leftovers from an old hunting game. Scan your machine with a
good AV program and use programs like Ad-Aware or Spy Bot regularly to
search out and remove spyware, junkware, malware, and so forth.

Maybe someone messed with your sound settings or you've installed a theme.
Go to Control Panel-> Sounds and audio devices. Then under the Sounds tab
change the sound scheme to windows default.

Sounds like the McAfee (I think) spam killer program. My wife runs it
on our desktop machine, and these are exactly the sounds it emits. A
gunshot means it's just killed a SPAM message. The dog barking means
it's flagged something as possible SPAM (I think). There's also
something like a harp being strummed when it passes an innocent
message.

MailWasher does this when messages identified as spam
come in unless you turn off the sound. Are you running
that program?
