getting rid of stubborn file

Hi,

my temp internet files were showing 140mb even when the showed empty, so in
line with the MS support page on this subject I moved this folder to another
location but I cannot delete the original one that contains three files
because when I do it say's
'cannot delete....the file name directory name or volume label is in
correct'

can anyone tell me how to get rid of these files that are useless but taking
up so much space?

Open Windows Explorer and click the VIEW menu. Click TOOLBARS and enable
the address bar.

Click TOOLS menu|FOLDER OPTIONS|VIEW tab and put a checkmark next to the
"show full path in the address bar" entry.

Select the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES directory (folder) that appears under
c:\Documents & Settings\<your_login_name>\Local Settings

Note that the full path to this directory is shown in the address bar, at
the top of the window.

To that path, _add_... \Content.IE5 Thus, the path will now be...
c:\Documents & Settings\<your_login_name>\Local Settings\Temporary
Internet Files\Content.IE5

Press <enter>. The Content.IE5 subdirectory should then appear at the
left, under TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES. Delete that directory to the
RECYCLE BIN.

Hi Dev,
I have followed you advice and then I get the error

'cannot delete (name of file which is several square symbols) the file name,
directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect'

Hi James,

Open a command prompt in the directory of the troublesome files, open
task manager and from it close windows explorer.

Now delete the files from the command prompt using del
name_of_file.extension

Go to task manager, and in 'New Task' enter explorer.exe.

If you want to get rid of a troublesome folder follow the same steps.
just situate yourself on the parent directory and type:
rd troublesome_directory

Hope this helps.

Hi Roger,

thanks but I cannot get that to work either. the directory does not seem to
exist in the cp window and I get the 'cannot find file specified' error, the
individual files names are a series of square boxes which I cannot replicate
on my key board.

Hi James,

Create a folder named 'troublesome,' drag the problematic files to
this folder and then delete the folder.

If you cannot delete the folder, try it in Safe Mode

If still no joy, and you feel comfortable using the Recovery Console,
get to it, choose Repair, and delete the troublesome folder from the
C:\prompt
C:\(Parent directory of troublesome folder)\ > rd troublesome

Hope this helps.
