Try this first: Download, install, update and scan with Ad-aware SE Personal
(it's free). http://www.lavasoftusa.com

DO NOT format C drive! All you need to do is a general cleanup.
To have your system run faster, disable all except your anti-virus app
at startup. Start here: Start>Run>type MSCONFIG and click OK
Click the Startup tab and uncheck/disable everything. Click Apply and Close.
Reboot. Nothing is deleted, all apps will run by just clicking their icons.

Hi.
I am interested in your suggestion thateverything in the msconfig, start up
tab except anti virus can be disabled, I get nervous when I go in there
because some of the items surely are essential for starting up the system.
All the advice I have been given states only disable if you are sure that
the item is one of your programs. If you so not know what the item is, leave
it active.

If you know better let me know, because I am unsure.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
