footnotes

I have received back a Spanish translation of my book
which already contained many Spanish citations. So what I
did when I sent the manuscript to the translator was to
cut out all these citations since he didn't have to
translate them. Now I am trying to paste these citations
back into the translated text but the ones that have a
footnote attached to it don't continue the numeration of
the text but begin with what seems to be a random
footnote number. It seems that the program sees these as
two independent sets of footnotes. How can I make this
work?
