before upgrading to winXP pro my win 98 had a folder
substituted for a driveletter, the command line went
something like this: 'subs o: c:\apps' - after the upgrade
this 'drive o:' has dissapeared, but all my shortcuts are
set up to use drive o:. How can this exchange of a folder
for a drive letter be done in win XP?

You'll need to map the folder as a network drive. For practical
purposes in this example, the computer name is "computer", the folder
name is "c:\shortcuts" and assumes you are using an administrator
account/profile, otherwise you need to reference "help & support" on
how to do this with a different logon.
Open Explorer
Select Tools
Select Map Network Drive
Select O: in the Drive Drop down box
Type \\computer\c$\shortcuts in the folder box
Check the "reconnect at logon box"
