Dose a FIXMBR wipe out all data on the drive or will my files and
applications be intact after running.

Who knows. If you need to run it then something is wrong. The partition table is stored with the MBR.

If you run it on a working system it is safe.

That command does not wipe out data on a drive. However, you should
definitely have your data backed up anyway.

Here is a link to Microsoft's definition of fixmbr:

No. It should actually fix a corrupt MBR and you should regain access to the
data on the harddrive.

some time I can boot up other time it just get the black screen. if I shut it
down and wait then I can get it to come back up

Doesn't sound like an MBR problem because it sometimes works. If the MBR
were corrupted it probably wouldn't work at all. What's the computer's
details and history? Give the details of the computer and, especiallly, any
recent hardware changes or software upgrades. I'm thinking overloaded or
failing power supply if you have recently added hardware.

I have a computer that occasionally gives a black screen on boot. It's a
slightly buggy BIOS I think. It was one of the earlier SATA RAID capable
boards and I don't think they got it entirely right .. so once in a while it
black screens. Simply rebooting usually does the trick although the odd time
the BIOS resets itself to non-RAID and I have to manually set it back.

Anway, it might help if you coughed up the nitty gritty details.

Krista, it's a bit hard to be specific with so little information, but
it sounds more like a failing power supply than a software issue. I
wouldn't run any software fixes like fixmbr until you determine the
real cause. It is easy to test if the problem is your power supply by
swapping it out for a known-working one.

You know your computer skills best - if you aren't comfortable testing
hardware and/or don't have the necessary spare parts lying around, take
the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
version of BigStoreUSA).

this is a laptop computer. No new hardware. No new software
Then the best thing to do would be to call the laptop mftr.'s tech
support because it does sound like it could be a hardware issue.

In theory no, in practice, one could lose all data in a second.

As you have demostrated no idea about anything else you cpomment on why is this thread different.
