Finding the high speed USB port

Every time I connect to one og the two USB ports in my IBM T40 I get the
message "This devise can perform faster..." It then tells me I have to change
port.
Looking in my Device Manager it states that the Iomega optical DVD burner is
connected to a USB 2.0 port - which I thought is the fastest.

What gives?

Hi,

Does it exhibit this behavior in both ports or just one? If just one, then
that port may be damaged.

Hi Rick.
It is in both ports.

I'm not sure if this would cause it. It coud in theory.

it could be a BIOS settings related to USB.

if you've got a certain phoenix bios, under "integrated peripherals"
and from there, in some cases, oddly, under "OnChip PCI Device" , are
options regarding USB. Ensure USB2 is enabled.

(and aside from that, I might suggest, for your keyboard, USB detected
at BIOS just so that the F8 key works and you can use a usb keyboard in
dos from a win 9x boot disk.)

Will try that, but am lost w/regards to the last part in ( )

you know when windows boots up , you can press F8 and get a menu
allowing you to go into safe mode and other things. IF you use a ps2
keyboard, you'll have no problem getting that. With USB there are a
few issuse.
Older comps may have trouble, the MBRD may have issues with USB, even
ones slightly newer than that, their BIOS may need updating to support
USB properly.
Most nowadays are past those troubles.
However, even nowadays, there is still an issue regarding the settings
in the BIOS for USB.
If you want to use your USB keyboard early on - before booting windows
98 GUI or xp. You have to ensure that the BIOS is set to allow it.

Sometimes the BIOS disables USB early on. So you can't press F8 and go
to the windows menu. This only affects a person if they're on a USB
keyboard.
I showed where the Phoenix award BIOS on 2 of my comps hides that USB
setting.

On motherboards with both Full & High Speed capability, the
connections to the appropriate Root Hubs is done automatically.

All sockets can be routed to the "Enhanced (USB 2)", single Hub.

USB 1(.1) devices use fixed routes to a dedicated USB 1 Hub.

It makes no difference when using USB 2 devices which socket
you plug into. Internally, the controller handles the route. When
using USB1(.1) peripherals the socket used does determine the
hub that handles the device.

Socket (Any) > Controller --if USB 2 --->Enhanced Controller-Hub
Socket #1----> Controller --if USB 1 --->USB-1 Hub #A
Socket #2----> Controller --if USB 1 --->USB-1 Hub #B
(For Example Only)
