files stuck in spooler

How do I stop files from getting stuck in the spooler? Their status is
"printing" and no files or printers are paused.

It's an intermittent problem, and it seems to recover within a day,
after several shutdowns and re-starts. But that can be a bit long to wait.

The print driver is Adobe Distiller. It feeds through Redmon into
Ghostscript.
