filename changes during save

I'm a bit frustrated by this perhaps someone can suggest how I can change
this 'behaviour'

Whenever I am saving a file and have to navigate to the folder I want to
save to, if I touch an existing filename in the save dialog box, the
filename of the file I am trying to save changes to the filename that I have
touched on. This is just annoying more than anything else. Can anyone
suggest how I can prevent this from happening?

You navigate to a folder and then select an existing file and expect Windows
not to think you want to save the file as what you have selected?
Possibly I've misunderstood the question but it sounds like you're asking
Windows to mind read.
Try not "touching" an existing file name. Either navigate to the folder and
type in a file name or type the entire path/file name from the initial save
dialogue.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for the reply. I'll try to explain better.
I'm dowloading a file from the internet and the save dialog box appears. I
select the folder I want to save into, and when that folder opens there
are other files inside it. If I don't get my mouse out of the way fast
enough, and the mouse pointer touches any other filename, the filename of
the file I am downloading changes to the "accidentally touched" filename.

Ahh thanks for the clarification.
Simply hovering your mouse over a filename selects an existing file(name)?
Certainly a new one on me. You aren't left clicking on an existing file?
What application is this? (browser, download manager, other?)

Yes, hovering is the correct term. This occurs in the IE6 browser. I have
SP2 installed.
No left clicking involved, just hovering. It is difficult to get the mouse
pointer "out of the way" in time, particularly when the folder populates the
dialog box with existing filenames.

Hi Paul,

Check your settings here:

1. If you are using X-Mouse, disable it.
2. If you have increased your menu screen, tone it down a couple of
notches.
3. If you are using, Open submenu's when I pause on them with my mouse,
un-check it.
4. Lastly, try lowering your hardware acceleration.

Thanks for jumping in, David. <w>

Is this hovering everywhere or just in IE's save as dialog?

I'm guessing this is something installed separately? I've never seen any
reference to this in XP.
2. If you have increased your menu screen, tone it down a couple of

I don't know what this means. Could you elaborate a bit?

Where would I find this checkbox? I have not found it yet...
4. Lastly, try lowering your hardware acceleration.

This I do understand!

Thanks for the near "realtime" replies!

This also occurs in Windows Explorer 'save as' dialog. I haven't found any
'save as' dialog yet where it doesn't happen.

How about on the desktop or in a explorer or folder view.

Just tried it. It does not happen on the desktop. However it does happen in
explorer and inside folders

How about links in internet explorer. Just tell me about how you tested the desktop. What do the labels of icons (eg their name) look like. Are the blue or underlined (that's everywhere - desktop, folders, et al)

OK this appears to be related to the "single click to open an item [point to
select]" option in folder options. If I switch to 'double-click' the problem
is gone, but I prefer single-click. I did not have this behaviour in
previous Windows versions. :(

I suppose I'll have to live with it one way or the other? Correct?

If you're using TweakUI, then uncheck the "Activation follows mouse" in the
Mouse > XMouse section

You must have your system set up with single-click? Change it to double
click and this won't happen.

This sounds as if in Control Panel - Folder Options you have the 'single
click open (point to select)' chosen, Then just passing the mouse over
an item selects it - including selecting for the Save dialog, where on
the other setting you would have to click on the entry (ready to edit
it - sometimes convenient)

I've heard of 3rd party programs that cause your computer to select any file
that your mouse lingers on. If you have that installed you should delete
it.
