File double click problems

I have been reading some of the post about problems with Windows explorer
opening files when double clicked. Has anyone experienced the problem of
files taking almost a minute to open after being double clicked? Occasionally
a double clicked file will open quickly but the very next file double clicked
takes the minute to open.

For instance: I double click a .txt file in Windows XP Explorer and it will
go to “Not Responding†for about a minute before it opens. This problem
occurs with every file type. Files will open immediately when opened in their
respective programs.

I have observed that in Folder Options in the Control Panel when I click the
File Types tab that the “flashlight searches for about a minute before it
displays the Registered File Types.

I have searched the Internet for answers but not found any resolution that

I am running Windows XP Professional – Service Pack 3
All updates applied

Computer is Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHZ.
1024 MB ram

I have spent hours trying to troubleshoot this problem.
Thanks for any help and suggestions you may have.
