fax/voice discrimination possible?

Can Windows XP discriminate between a voice and fax call
so that it can automatically answer faxes coming in? I
can't find a way to do it. Looks to me like I can only
receive faxes automatically, but I'd love to be able to
do it when I'm not home. If it's not possible, can I buy
other software that can do it and maybe get it to work
with my answering machine? Thank you.
 
Distinctive Ring is not supported by Windows XP. Therefore, Windows XP Fax
will answer every incoming call it receives. The alternative is to install
an external switching device to your phone line.
 
What type of external switching device is necessary, and
where would I buy it? Thank you very much.

Use fax software that DOES support distinctive ring, even on Windows XP
systems. Have a look at the Fax Machine application on
