Extremely Frustrated!!!!

What started out to be "gaining complete control of my
PC" has become very frustrating. In trying to rename my
recycle bin I think I've tried everything in the book,
all to no avail. Several nice people gave me instructions
yesterday from this forum but none of them (I followed
their instructions to the letter) worked. The last tip
was to go to www.techtv which I did. They say if I go to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{645FF040-5081-101B-9508-
00AA0025954E}\ShellFolder, then double-click on
Attributes and change the hexadecimal code from 40 01 00
20 to 70 01 00 20, then click OK the change will take
place and I will be able to right click on the recycle
bin icon and rename it.
That didn't work either. First of all my
hexadecimal code wasn't 40 01 00 20, it was: 70 10 00 20,
all I had to do was invert the 10 to 01. Still, it
didn't work. I have windows XP home (it's fairly new as
I bought it August 23 of 2003). Is it possible that
windows has made it impossible to do this?
Thanks to everyone for trying to help.

Sorry, I don't have an answer ... however, just why did you decide that
you needed to rename this? What's wrong with the existing name?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

<some snippage>

Hard to keep up, you continue to start new threads. This is
from a text file I have had for years (NT 4 & Win2k Pro).
regedt32.exe defaults to regedit.exe in WinXP Pro.

Q. How do I delete/rename the Recycle Bin?

A. When you right click on the Recycle Bin it's context menu does not
display a rename or delete option as on other desktop shortcuts/components.
To add the rename option perform the following:

Start the registry editor (regedt32.exe, don't user regedit.exe)
Move to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\ShellFolder
Double click on the Attributes value in the right hand pane
Change from 40010020 to 50010020
Click OK
If you right click on Recycle Bin you now have a rename option.

If you want to be able to delete the icon change the Attributes value to
60010020 by following the procedure above. To have the rename and delete
option change the Attributes value to 70010020. You can now delete by right
clicking on the icon and select Delete. Click Yes to the confirmation.

***The lines below I added after installing WinXP Pro***

{This is only way to get it to work in WindowsXP}:

Also try going to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software|Microsoft|Windows|CurrentVersion|
Explorer|CLSID|{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
Change Default string to "Garbage Can" or any other name.

***end of text file***

Did you try making a .reg file? If no spyware or other problems with
your computer, the simple change above should always work!

Laters,
Dick

I think I tried to change it just because I can't. It is
after all my PC because I bought it and I like having
control over it. I can change the name of everything
else, so why not the recycle bin?

Okay, I tried it but it didn't work. In fact, yesterday
I was told the same thing. I also tried to make a .reg
file as you suggested, but that wouldn't work either as a
window appeared saying I had to use binary code in order
to create a .reg file. I was using binary code (I think)
as it was one of the tips.
Also, I have Norton AV which I keep up-to-date, and
Spybot S&D. According to both, my PC is clean of
Spyware/adware & viruses. So I guess this little
adventure in gaining control of my PC ends here as
nothing works and it really is silly of me to be so
determined!
Thanks a bunch for your input and for taking the time to
try to help. It's much appreciated!

Gayle,

Because of your question, this is what I just tried on both of my Windows XP
Pro machines to change the name of the Recycle Bin: using regedit, navigate
to HKEY_CURRENT
USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Explorer\CLISD\645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-
00AA002F954E. Left click on the 645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-
00AA002F954E folder, then right click on Default in the right-hand pane and
select Modify. In the Value data line, type in whatever you want to name
your Recycle Bin and click ok. Go to your desktop, I did this with the WIN +
D keys, and hit F5 to refresh it. You should see the Recycle Bin renamed to
what you want it to be.

Let me know if this works for you.

Mike

You've got to get a life if you have this much of a need and get so
frustrated...

One side comment. Regedt32 in XP is just a stub for those NT users who
can't remember to change. All it does is load regedit

Agreed Alex, this is the third line, above the quoted text file:
"regedt32.exe defaults to regedit.exe in WinXP Pro."
Nothing new from the OP, wonder if Gayle ever got it to work?

Can the regedt32 in 2K be used in XP?

You can type either one, calls the same.

I think Steve meant 'Can you transfer the actual Win2000 regedt32.exe
and run it successfully on XP'. I don't know the answer and am not
inclined to risk it.

The <Registry Lite> puts back the "Security" option on the menu bar. It has
the flexibility of RegEdt32 as seen in Windows 2000. That is, in using
Registry Lite in Xp Home, no need to boot into Safe-Mode and you can see
still see the User Security privileges as well as Resource Control
privileges within the Advanced option feature.

You can download it 'free' at:

The older "File Manager" (winfile.exe) that was used in NT 4.0 will do
the same thing. Works flawlessly in Win2000 and XP. You can get a
copy on Kelly's web site. No need for other utilities to restore the
security tab or function.
