Error Msg: Operating System Not Found

i got a windows update that advised to back-up system, but i had no discs at the time. i figured i could just save/close, but it crashed my entire system. After running the recovery discs, all I get is a black screen with the message OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND. Anyone out there know what I should do? I'll need really explicit directions because I'm an idiot. Thanks!!!!
