A friend has either a virus or insidious malware in his
PC (XP Home). It has changed his home page in IE to
gibberish (something like 56%60%67%64%....). If you
change the home page it soon reverts again to the
gibberish. Trying to run Updates gives "Error
0x800A1391." Trying to run System Restore give a blank
window. Trying to run the Trend Micro Online Virus Scan
causes the process to stop before the signature updates
install.

Anyway, can't go forward and can't go back. Other than
that, everything on the machine works okay. He can use
the Internet.

What can we do?

Your friend has sustained a browser hijacking by those
CoolWebSearch maniacs. They aren't "cool" and the only
search they should be involved in is the one where the
FBI catch them and throw them into the penitentiary.

What used to be a minor irritation has lately turned into
a full blown trojan.

From a clean computer, please go to any of the following
sites for removal instructions, and to learn how to
prevent this happening again:

I am sorry you have suffered this nasty experience.
