Epson C80 Windows XP driver install for network--how to

Since I didn't find this anywhere by Googling it, I'm posting here for
reference.

I have an Epson C80 that I use with a pocket print server. It prints
fine with IP and AppleTalk from a wide variety of Macintosh and Windows
machines (pre-XP).

Yesterday I installed Windows XP Pro and tried to install the Epson
driver from their web site, with the goal of pointing the driver to an
LPR port that will print to the C80. The download file from Epson is
epson10192.exe. I expanded the file; it unzipped to C:\Epson\10192 with
a Setup.exe file, a few others, and a subfolder of compressed
installation files.

I tried to run Setup; it got so far and then the Epson Printer Setup
Utility hung, locked up. It was in the taskbar but not evident on
screen anywhere. When I went to Task Manager, I saw that NTVDM.EXE and
WOW.EXE were running, and under WOW.EXE was SETUP.EXE.

I couldn't close out of the program; I had to end the task abnormally.
It seems the 16 bit environment was crashing somehow. (I was aghast
that any part of this was running in Windows' 16 bit environment,
anyway.) One of the errors was an NTVDM.EXE error.

No amount of trying to run Epson's Setup program in different
compatibility modes made any difference.

I finally turned off the C80 and unhooked the print server from it and
plugged the USB cable in, plugged the USB cable into the XP box, and
turned on the C80. Immediately XP saw the C80 and wanted to install it,
and asked for an install disk. I browsed to the c:\epson\10192 folder,
and opened the subfolder within that was full of compressed install
files. Voila. XP's add hardware routine was happy to add the C80 as a
USB printer.

Once installed, it was easy to change the port to an LPR port and point
it to the pocket print server.

Epson *really* needs to get a clue on their XP drivers, apparently.
Now, I wonder: if I had downloaded the driver files for the C80N
(networked) or C80WN (wireless networked), both configurations that were
sold by Epson, would the driver installation have been more friendly?
Hmmmm......
