E-mail message shows in Outbox as being unsent, but it really WAS

I have been using Outlook on this computer for 5+ years and never had this
problem before yesterday. I hit send and it appears that the e-mail remains
in the Outbox without being sent. I was in the process of composing another
e-mail to 'replace' the one that didn't go out and I got a response from the
person to whom I sent the e-mail.

It did the same thing this morning on a group distribution list. I have
myself as a member of this list so when I saw that the mail was still in my
Outbox, I hit send/receive and I got the e-mail.

I am very confused.

Hi Marty,
Check the information listed here, there may be a solution that fits your
particular issue:
http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/messagestuckinoutbox.htm

I can delete the message from the outbox with no difficulty. The problem is
that it still shows in the Outbox when the message has actually gone out.
Maybe I need to start marking all my message with a delivery receipt, but
that is kind of a pain.

The other thing that is SO puzzling to me is that it just started doing this
yesterday!

Thanks for the response
