Hello,

I am in need of technical support. I recently dowloaded
a game from the web through a company called (TM
Netgames). After I downloaded this game my screen had
gotten wider to the point that icons & my start button
were no longer in sight. I than proceded to call Dell
support where they ran me through a bunch of tests with
changing settings on the monitor & going to display and
seeing if this would fix the problem which it didn't.
Dell than recommended me reinstalling all of my drivers
whcih again did not fix the problem that I was having. A
technician from Dell than recommended me to contact
Microsoft. The Dell technician told me that they think
that when I downloaded the game It may have changed a
setting in my Video Driver and that Microsoft tech
support could help assist me in updating my DX DIAG to
hopefully fix the problem that has been occuring. Can
you please tell me what my best course of action would be
to fix this problem.

Are you using a CRT monitor or a flat panel like an LCD? Just in case, note
that there is a difference betwen the deep and heavy "Flat Screen" CRTs and
"Flat Panel" displays that are much lighter and only a few inches deep. Your
desktop AND your game need to be set to the native resolution of a flat
panel display to work properly. This requirement would apply to both the
larger horizontal resolution and the smaller vertical resolution. In MOST
cases these numbers will have a 4:3 ratio like 800X600, 1024X768 or
1200X900. I haven't seen any, but I can't rule out a flat panel that is
taller than it is wide.

I think the support operator at Dell may not have been equiped with the
proper information to resolve your problem. It sounds like your video driver
is producing a display that is too wide for your monitor to handle. That
situation can arise after a vertical refresh rate change. The video cards I
have used have independent settings for vertical refresh rate display
position and size for each display resolution. At the same time the monitors
seem to have independent display position and size settings for each
vertical refresh rate. Installing the new game apparently changed your
screen resolution to one you hadn't used previously.

If you have a CRT monitor you may need to adjust your desktop resolution,
your display vertical refresh rate position and size in advanced display
options AND make size and position adjustments with the controls on your
monitor. Specific instructions vary betwen different manufacturers and
models. Some games that run full screen have seperate resolution settings.

If you post the model numbers of your computer and display, someone with
similar equipment may be able to offer more specific instructions.

Sorry, but MS technical support (which this isn't, this is a peer-to-peer
newsgroup) will *NOT* assist you as your version of Windows is considered to
be OEM as it came with your system. Dell is the sole provider of support. Of
course, MS will assist you for a per-incident fee of around £250. Please
read the EULA (which can be found by typing winver into the run box and
clicking the link) specifically paragraph five. You have to persue this with
Dell, MS will *NOT* assist.
