Dropped Internet connections

Hi there! I have a problem with with my Internet connections. My sessions
keep on dropping and it says the link to my ISP failed. I don't receive any
error messages either. This happens at random intervals and then I have to
make another dial-up connection. I've already changed my port rate setting to
various rates (even down to 9600, I'm using a 56K modem) but that doesn't
help. I also changed the idle settings to never hang up. The line noise on my
telephone line is low and there are no other faults on it, and there are no
other devices sharing the phone line. All my ISP settings are correct and
everything else seems to be in order. I've tried all of the troubleshooting
methods suggested by Windows XP. I dont think it spyware either as I've
cleared all spyware. I've been told its a security issue and that SP 2 will
sort it out. At the moment I'm waiting for the SP 2 cd to arrive from
Microsoft. Please help. Thanks.

Things to try (I doubt this is a security issue):

1. Update the drivers for your modem. Get drivers from either the modem
mftr.'s website or your OEM's website if applicable - not from Windows
Update.

2. Change out the cable running to the phone jack for a new one. If the
old one got stepped on or otherwise damaged (and those small flat
cables can get damaged easily), that could cause your problem. Are you
using an extremely long cable? Signal degrades over cable length. Using
splitters? Connection with a splitter can be problematic.

3. When you say the line noise is low, how do you know that? Data
requires a far cleaner line than does voice. Have you ever had a good
connection from that particular phone jack? If yes, then what changed?
If no, then the problem is probably with the phone line itself which
means you need to call your telephone company.

4. Try from a different phone jack (if possible).

5. Swap out your modem for a different, known-working modem.

Get used to dropped connections on dialup. They are just a fact of
life and will continue no matter what you do - it doesn't matter if
you get a new modem, load all new drivers, or replace all the cables
from you modem to the phone switching center.

My last dialup experience was horrible. The connection dropped about
30 times/hour. The ISP said it was the fault of the phone company and
their lines; the phone company blamed the connections at the ISP end.
I finally just gave up, spent a little more money and invested in DSL
as Cable wasn't available there yet. I've never looked back.
