Downloading Updates - Taking Forever!

I reinstalled Windows XP Pro in my parent's computer. When I went to install the updates it listed 41 files at 43mb including service pack 1 express. It took over half an hour to download the files and then the install went on for hours. When I wasn't there my mom did something that cancelled the unpacking of the files and we are starting at square one again. Why does it take so long to install the updates? They have a relatively new and fast computer.

Hi Sue,

It's not the speed of the computer so much as it is a limitation of the
bandwidth for the downloads. Even if she has a fast connection, she will be
limited by the most narrow point between her and the server supplying the
updates. Keep in mind also that SP1 can potentially be as large as 135MB,
even with the express pack as is identifies which updates are needed.

Installing is another process altogether, as each has to setup, disable
affected components, replace system files, etc. All processes that take
time - though it certainly is much faster now than it was 10 years ago (when
a drive that could hold a 135MB file was beyond the budget of an ordinary
user).
