Two days ago, I downloaded a windows update (by clicking
on the prompt I always see at the right bottom of the
screen - tray?). I downloaded a bunch of update stuff and
then tried to reboot my computer. The computer began to
update as usual. Then, after the "Windows 2000
Professional" screen (with the blue progress bar at the
bottom) finished, another blue screen appeared for an
instant (with some writing which I could not read because
of the speed with witch it came and went)and the machine
tried to reboot again then froze. I tried this a number
of times with the same result. I also tried to restart in
safe mode and "the last working configuration..." mode -
still same result. How can I gain access and/or, what
have I done?
Thanks,
Stuart

One approach would be to install a second instance of Windows into a
separate folder, and then edit the registry of the original install so that
it does not automatically reboot. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;174630&Product=win2000

If you are getting a memory dump, then also see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;192463&Product=win2000.
This tells you how to get the blue screen info from the memory dump.

If you have recovery console installed, you can boot that, and check out
your system, run CHKDSK / CHKNTFS, et al.

Depending on how much time I have, and the mission-critical nature of this
system, or more accurately, the lack thereof (I would not do this on a
mission critical system without considering the impact), I would boot from
the Windows 2000 CD, let setup run, and tell it I want it to repair the
existing installation.

A word of caution......I WOULD TEST UPDATES / patches , ON A TEST serve
FIRST.
