DOS programs under Windows 2000

We are running a industry specific program that is a DOS
program written in basic. It works fine in DOS. When
trying to run in a DOS window under Win2K or Win98 the
program generates a Basic error #75 "Path/File Access
Error". We think that the program can open the file to
try to write data, but then can not see the file after
that to write the data to it.
We hate to reinvent the wheel and rewrite the program in
another language as it works well now under DOS. Any ideas
out there??
Thanks in advance for any help.
