Distorted sound

One of our machines has two or perhaps three symptoms, depending on how you
count. The machine seems very slow at first and then seems to get faster.
When bad the mouse "skips" and programs open and close very slowly. One can
see message pop ups draw as they appear. The sound is often distorted
particularly when loud, as if over driven. The third possible symptom
showed up when running disk cleanup: there were more than 700 mbytes of
CHKDSK files. However, the Western Digital diag program returned no errors.
The speakers, sound card and cd writer have all been swapped. The on board
sound card is disabled in BIOS and Device Manager. When clean booted the
problem is unchanged. The machine has 1 gig of memory and performance is
set to let Windows manage it. Any suggestions?

To start without knowning more.....

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:

Note: Update each program, once installed, before running.

That said, disable your anti-virus program(s) set to run at boot, have you
tried a different mouse (how does a mouse skip, btw?), what are the visual
effects set to, what is the menu speed set to, check disk has nothing to do
with WD diag.

Lastly for now: Read the log file from here and good luck!
