My daughter's computer's sound recently has become very distorted. I've
swapped out the speakers, the speaker's power supply, the wires, and another
sound card without improving it a bit. So, evidently it must be some sort of
internal Windows problem. It's Windows XP Professional with SP1. Any
guidance appreciated. TIA.

There have been problems with Sound Blaster drivers. I'd suggest that, if
you do use SB, update to the latest version.

Additionally, you may have interference problems. Open your system and move
the sound card. Make sure it isn't near the network, modem or video card.
Also, make sure it isn't in the first or last PCI slot. If it has to be near
one of the cards above, make it the network card.

Oops! I should have identified it. I can't move it, it's in the motherboard.
It's a VIA AC97 integrated sound setup. I disabled it in the BIOS when I
tried the other card. Windows update had a new driver for it in August. It
worked fine before and after the driver update.
