Distinctive Ring

I was told by a Symantec's representative that Windows XP does not support distinctive ring for the purpose of receiving faxes and having the computer answer only the distinctive ring. That was supposedly true even if the fax or modem software does support distinctive ring

Is that true

The Symantec rep is correct. WinXP does not support distinctive ring, as
described briefly in this MS KB article:

In essence, XP sticks to the UNIMODEM / TAPI standard, which does not
support distinctive ring.
