I am trying to help another one of our Senior Group Members.

He is using XP home and all was OK until recently, now when he opens the
desktop it is all squiggly lines etc. He can right click on a vacant spot,
select Properties and go to Setting which is set at 800 x 600, but is unable
to be adjusted with the slider bar.

The colour Quality is set at Minimum (4 bit ) and cannot be altered.

He has just installed an ADSL modem for Broadband with which he had some
problems setting up and doesn't want to restore to an earlier time as he
would lose the ADSL setup (we think)

Can anyone offer us some assistance please. I got him to run sfc /scannow
but that didn't resolve the problem.

Many thanks

First, try reinstalling the video card drivers. Do not use drivers from
Windows Update. Drivers should be downloaded from the device mftr.'s
website, and any installation instructions found there should be
followed.

If the problem persists after new drivers, there may be a hardware
issue. You didn't give details, but perhaps a network card (nic) was
installed for your friend's dsl and the video card was slightly
dislodged. Open the computer (while it is off!) and reseat all cards.
If that doesn't solve the problem, attach the computer to a different
monitor. If the problem goes away, the first monitor is bad. If the
problem remains, then swap out the video card with a known-working one.

If all this seems a bit much, call a local computer repair person to
come and check it out.

Good luck,

Malke

Thanks Malke,

I will pass that onto him. Yes he did install a card so it is a good
possibility that is what happened.
