Whenever I try to use BackUpMyPc to create a backup to a DVD, I get a message that the device is in use. I found an article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base about a similar problem which said this happens because DirectCD has locked the drive and it needs to be unlocked. However, I cannot find a command/option etc. to unlock the drive.

You might try asking Roxio what's causing it or how to stop it,

If you have DIrect CD (or InCD) installed, either uninstall it, or use
MSConfig to stop it loading - both in the Startup page, and on the
Services one (check Hide all Microsoft), and reboot so it is not in use.
If you use the inbuilt burning I would disable that on the drive - My
Computer, r-click the drive - Properties and uncheck 'Enable' on the
Recording page
