Hi all,

How can I determine the apps that are autostarting on my Windows XP
machine? How can I keep a program from autostarting?

Tom

Autoruns is a programme, which list everything starting and
where it starts from.Try downloading and installing:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

You can save the output of the Everything tab to a txt file.
Place the cursor on any item in the list and it gives a save
as option on the File drop down. Post a copy of suspect
entries giving details of the start location.

Open System Information...
Start | Run | Type: msinfo32 | Click OK |
Click the [+] next to Software Environment |
Click on Startup Programs

If you so desire, hit Ctrl + A to select all, then Ctrl + C to copy and then
paste into Notepad or whatever.

Then get StartMan and/or Startup Control Panel (both are free) to disable
startups. Both of these will also show all startup programs.

[[StartMan is an extended 'msconfig' Startup Manager, designed to take
control of all those pesky programs and background services that load and
run at logon - most of which you probably don't need. As well as providing
the usual trouble-shooting options to enable or disable startups, StartMan
also permits the removal of startups.
Duplicate Detection and Removal, a unique feature of StartMan, can be
configured to remove all duplicates automatically, with or without
prompting.
Orphan Detection and Removal. As above, for orphaned startups.
Executable Detection and Removal. As above, for executables.
Includes a full range of sorting options to make it easier to locate a
specific startup - by name, by filename - even by command line parameter! ]]

Startup Control Panel is another pretty good application.

[[Startup Control Panel is a nifty control panel applet that allows you to
easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. It's simple
to use and, like all my programs, is very small and won't burden your
system. A valuable tool for system administrators!]]

Download the EXE Version and just extract the executable wherever you want.

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its Options to
see if it has the choice not to start (make sure you actually choose the
option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon" option). Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG from the
Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't
want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of running
the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell you, you
should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs you run, but
*which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but others have no
effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do is
determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what the cost
in performance is of its running all the time. You can get more information
about these at http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it
there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.

Did anyone notice that it now has spyware of sorts in it? Try to use
the help files and it wants to connect to a Microsoft or Akamai site. I
noticed this on version 8.52. I don't know if that was there before
Microsoft acquired Sysinternals or if it only started after. I'm less
than impressed to say the least...

John

1. sysinternals now belongs to Microsoft.
2. When you click Help it wants to go to Microsoft to download the latest
help for the program.
3. Microsoft often uses Akamai for their downloads.

That is very confusing. How does the average bloke know what should be
running and doesn't need to be running?

Then why in the name of sanity for its consumers, doesn't MS tell us these
things? What's the big secret about using XP Pro and having a healthy
system?

Frankly, for the money we spend on these systems, we should be able to
receive easy to understand information from the billionaire corp. MS.

I once was hired to write a printer manual for an infamous company, because
their consumers were complaining. They gave me a stack of fourteen (14)
different printer manuals to refer to, in case I needed more technical
information.

They were all atrocious. If medical and science writers wrote like these
techno-writers attempt to write for the consumer, we'd all be dead within
thirty (30) days--at the hands of medical science.

My rave for the day!

I haven't seen this behavior in autoruns.exe, version 8.54?

Are you placing the autoruns.chm file (Help file) in the same folder with autoruns.exe? If it is placed in the same folder, the program will open this help file when you click Help/Help in autoruns.

Yes, all the files are in the same folder and the folder only contains
Autoruns files from the same version package. It only wants to connect
out if I use the help menu. I don't know about v 8.54 but 8.52
definitely wants to call home, and it's quite persistent!

John

What's confusing? The average bloke can research using Google
if that's what they want to do? That surely is obvious?
