I recently built a laptop with Win2k. The install went
fine except for one thing, many of the desktop icons have
changed themselves to match an existing desktop icon. With
each new software install, the newly created desktop icon
will take the icon that matches the one they all take.
When you try to change the icon it will show the one you
want as the icon, but when you look at the desktop, it
still shows the unwanted icon. Even after changing the
icon to a different icon, the unwanted icon remains.
Thanks for any help in this matter.

Mike ...

Delete the c:\winnt\shelliconcache file (note: it is a hidden file) and log
off. When you log back on, do the icons display correctly?

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Mike entered the post on my behalf. I am the one with the
icon problem on the desktop. I deleted the shelliconcahe
file and no luck. I also followed instructions in Article
132668 and still no luck. When I first boot up, I see the
correct icons on the desktop momentarily and then they are
overlayed by the Kodak Imaging icon. No matter what I
install, the icons all appear as the Kodak Image icon,
even though the properties for the shortcut show the
correct icon when I choose "Change Icon" button. Is there
anything else to try? Help!

You might try the free Activicons utility from
http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_ai.html and do the following:

1-- in ActivIcons, go to its "Desktop Controls" screen and increase
the icon cache size to at least 2048, and then

2-- purge the icon cache. The options for rebuilding the cache are on
2 small round buttons at the lower/right corner. Shut down any
programs running in the background, then click the round button
farthest to the lower/right corner (your system will reboot, and the
icon cache will be cleaned out).

That may do it. Just deleting the shelliconcache from within Windows
usually fails to clean things up completely for me. However, if doing
those two things does not work, you might browse around its screens to
make sure that the "Shortcut" icon is pointing to the default arrow
icon in Shell32.dll
