In Control Panel, Display applet, General tab, change the DPI setting
from 96DPI to 120DPI (examples, yours might be different).

Q

Right click on the desktop -> properties -> Appearance tab -> Advanced
Button -> Select Icon from the Item dropdown and change the size in the box
on the right.

Q

For some reason my interpretation of the DPI settings is reversed.
Change to a smaller number for smaller icons.

Hello;
Thanks for responding. However, your suggestion changes everything on the
screen. I only want to reduce the size of the icons on the desktop.

Control Panel - Display - Appearance, click Advanced. In the Items drop
down, select Icon and change the size. Also possibly the font used and
its size. Note that this will affect My Computer/Explorer windows as
well

Hi,

Go to Start/Run/Regedit, navigate to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

Create a new value named 'Shell Icon Size' and set the value, or modify the
existing value,
to equal the size of your icons in pixels you prefer. Default is 32, try
16.
