After I click on a drive in the Safe to Remove Program, there is an almost
10 second delay before the "Safe to remove" window appears. On my other
computer with Windows Vista the "Safe to remove" window appears almost
instantaneously. Reason for the delay? Can I speed up the response?

If Vista is set not to actually write to the drives while the machine is
busy, Safe to Remove Hardware makes sure the writing is actually done before
telling you it's safe to remove the drive. That's why you should always use
it.

The length of time for this procedure depends on the the device and what may
be happening as far as writing to the device.

Your best bet is to use the Optimize for quick removal option. This does
cause a small hit on the performance of the device, but it allows you to
simply unplug the device without being concerned about corrupting anything.

Open Control Panel and go to the Device Manager. In the device manager,
locate and right click on the removable device, select Properties/Policy
tab. click Optimize for quick removal. If you have a noticeable slowdown in
your normal operations with this setting you can simply reverse it.

Ronnie,
Thanks for the tip on Device manager and Optimizing. That was the problem:
somehow the "Optimize for Quick Removal" was already selected (???). Thus
the Safe Removal Tool wasn't necessary and there was a delay in the Safe to
Remove window to appear.. It works fine now.
