cannot defrag..goes for a long time (24 hours) and never gets past 1%. All other programs are closed. Any suggestions?

Open a Command Prompt.
In the Command Prompt type the following...
CHKDSK C: /F
If it replies..
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?
(Y/N)"
Choose - Y
type; EXIT
Reboot the PC.
A full Check Disk will want to be performed, allow it.
When it reboots, go and try the Defrag again.

Is your drive packed nearly full? You might not have enough free space left
on the drive to work with... maybe you need to free up some space.

You could also try running the defrag in safemode.

But if it were mine I would check the disk space left, first.
Double click My Computer
right click C:\
choose properties
check to see if you have 15% left free.
If you do not
I would do this first
click start
Run...
type CMD /k <enter>
type CHKDSK /V <enter>
shouldn't take over a minute or two.
go back to My Computer properties
and press the disk cleanup button
let it run through
restart you pooter
go back to My Computer properties
check to see how much disk space is FREE
If it is at least 15%, turn off any scheduled items and your screen saver
and try to defrag
It still could take 30 minutes
If you have not finished in an hour
stop it
do this
Start

And this will take 30 minutes or so
After completion
restart and defrag again

because it is too slow. Go to www.filemirrors.com and
download the Diskeeper 8.0 or Diskeeper 7.0.

Yeah this advice although likely well intentioned is not really correct. The defragger should work for you and depending on how many small files; the size of shelliconcache; your registry size; size of software.log; your available free space; running background applications;... you have can take a while. Make sure you have over 15% free space AND try it in Safe Mode.
