What is the best defrag util. for NTFS files? I understand that Norton
Util will not do it. Any recommendations?

Thanks Bob

You might wish to consider purchasing a more powerful
and thorough defragmenter program, such as PerfectDisk,
which has the capability to defrag both the MFT and pagefile
offline.

That's a question that gets different answers from different
people. There is no one program that is universally agreed to be
best.

I understand that
Norton Util will not do it.

You understand incorrectly. That's one of the choices you may
consider.

Norton Utilities Speedisk works fine with NTFS. However, IMO, the
best defrag utility is Perfect Disk 6.0. www.raxco.com

Norton Speed disk is not up to date for XP (and apparently will not be
updated) - in particular it will not handle the 'Prefetch' optimisation
that XP provides for and thus does a less satisfactory job than the
inbuilt tool.

The two good third party tools are Diskeeper from Executive software,
and Perfect Disk from Raxco. Having tried (and paid for) both, my own
preference is Perfect Disk; mainly because it compacts free space, which
Diskeeper deliberately does not, and does not require anything like so
much free space on the disk before it will work
